WINNERS IN PENINSULA PRESS CLUB'S JOURNALISM AWARDS COMPETITION: SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, KCBS RADIO, KTVU-TV BIG WINNERS

BURLINGAME, Calif., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The San Jose Mercury News, KCBS Radio, KGO Radio and KTVU-TV were the big winners in the Peninsula Press Club's 16th annual Professional Journalism Awards Competition, the press club said today.
The press club's "Evening of Excellence" honored the best of the best in Bay Area journalism for 1992. Local journalists submitted more than 400 entries, competing in various categories for newspaper dailies, weeklies, radio and television.
Prizes were presented Friday night during the club's annual awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame. KCBS Radio morning co-anchor Lois Melkonian and veteran San Francisco Chronicle reporter Bill Workman were co-hosts for the evening.
The press club's board of directors presented its annual Bonnie Chastain Memorial Award for Public Service to the Tenderloin Times of San Francisco. Published in three languages, the Times is dedicated to covering the Tenderloin community. The newspaper's public service approach has included investigations of homeless deaths in the inner city and campaigns for homeless shelters and a neighborhood park. Accepting the Bonnie Chastain Award were Tenderloin Times editors Julie Scheff and Josh Brandon.
The press club also awarded $1,000 scholarships to two Bay Area college journalists. The print category winner was Stanford University student Howard Libit, a former editor of the Stanford Daily. The broadcast winner was San Jose State University student Michael Gardiner, a news writer at KNTV-11.
The new and photography staff of the San Jose Mercury News won a total of 13 awards. The San Francisco Chronicle was also a big winner, earning 9 awards.
KCBS Radio and KGO Radio each won a total of eight awards.
In television, KTVU earned the most awards with six.
The awards ceremony included a tribute to the Peninsula Times Tribune, the 100-year-old afternoon daily that closed earlier this month. Winners this year and during previous press club competitions included members of the Times Tribune staff.
