WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN 30TH ANNUAL GOLDEN QUILL AWARDS COMPETITION

 /ADVANCE/PITTSBURGH, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Winners in the 30th annual Golden Quill Awards competition were announced during a program this evening at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers in downtown Pittsburgh.
 The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is the program's sponsor.
 Several special awards were presented, as well as citations recognizing professional excellence in written, photographic and broadcast journalism in western Pennsylvania.
 Named to receive the President's Award is the staff of The Pittsburgh Press. This award traditionally has been presented to the individual who has made important continuing contributions to western Pennsylvania journalism.
 For the best overall entry in print journalism, daily newspapers and wire services with circulation over 45,000, Art Heinz of the Tribune-Democrat, Johnstown, Pa., claimed the Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for "Beyond Our Means." Taking this honor for newspapers with circulation under 45,000 is Barbara Daugherty of the Valley News Dispatch for "When Children Have Children."
 In the non-daily newspapers and magazines category, Pittsburgh City Paper's William Loeffler received the Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for "August Wilson: The Story of a Storyteller."
 Ed King Memorial awards for the "best entry" in radio and the "best entry" in television were presented. Bob Kopler, Mike Whitely and Liz Randolph of KDKA-AM received the award for "Pittsburgh Press Strike." Television's winner was WPXI-TV's David Johnson and Tom Racette for "Pittsburgh Crackdown." Sue Brozek, Dan Pratt, Ralph Bell and Nicki Keefer of WTAE-TV received the Ed Romano Memorial Award for excellence in photojournalism for the entry, "Demolition Worker."
 The James J. Cuddy Memorial Award, for college students demonstrating outstanding potential in writing, went to John Temple of the University of Pittsburgh.
