WINLAND ELECTRONICS REPORTS CONTINUED SALES AND EARNINGS GROWTH IN SECOND QUARTER

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., July 29, /PRNewswire/ -- Winland Electronics, Inc. today announced strong sales and earnings results for the second quarter and six month periods ended June 30, 1993.
Sales for the three month period ended June 30, 1993 increased 66 percent to $837,701 from $505,298 reported one year ago. Net earnings in the second quarter increased to $73,505, or $.037 per share, compared to $4,697, or $.002 per share, for the same period in 1992.
For the six month period ended June 30, 1993 sales were $1,614,825, a 34 percent increase over sales of $1,207,011 reported for the comparable period last year. Net earnings during the six months ended June 30, 1993 increased 144 percent to $131,936, or $.067 per share, compared to $54,151, or $.027 per share, for the same period one year ago.
Increased sales in the second quarter and six month periods ended June 30, 1993 were primarily due to increased demand from certain OEM customers, and growth in Winland's proprietary products. The increase in sales also reflects the continuing benefit of the company's increased investments in marketing and research and development.
Improved earnings performance during both the three and six month periods ended June 30, 1993 was primarily the result of increases in sales representing 66 percent and 34 percent, respectively, during the two periods. Total operating expenses increased 17 percent during the second quarter this year compared to last year, and 12 percent during the first six months this year compared to last year. As a percentage of sales, however, total operating expenses declined.
 W. Kirk Hankins, Winland's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated, "Sales are increasing because we have continued to improve our product offering and consciously invested in our capability as a key OEM manufacturer." He added, "Today, we are better able to focus on growth, because the aggressive programs we launched two years ago in cost control and production have had such an integrated, lasting effect on operations."
Winland Electronics, Inc., based in Mankato, Minn., designs, manufactures, and markets electronic and electro-mechanical products and assemblies. The company's common stock is traded on the Minneapolis/St. Paul over-the-counter market and is listed on the Pink Sheets.
