WIND AIDS NEWPORT U-21 FIGHT; UNDER-21s RUGBY UNION.

NEWPORT Under-21s overcame the elements and visitors Ebbw Vale to open their Wales Under 21s Premier Division League campaign with an entertaining 29-19 success.

The Rodney Parade youngsters, who sat out last week's fixture programme in the nine-club Premier Division, trailed 19-10 at the interval but with the wind at their backs the home side dominated the second half.

Ebbw Vale, who had beaten Llanelli in an impressive manner last week, gave an ill-disciplined performance and were fully punished by Rhys Gosling who fired over five penalties.

The visitors had started brightly with the highly impressive flanker Alistair Rogers scoring an early try to cap another fine performance. Flyhalf Ross Watts added the conversion and the prolific pointsscorer also landed four penalties for the visitors.

The home side battled back into the game with Gosling orchestrating the second half. Centre Nathan Brew and wing Al Luscombe crossed for tries for the home side.

"We were pleased with the overall performance and the players showed excellent commitment and spirit. With a relatively new squad from last season we are delighted to open in such an impressive manner, " said a Newport spokesperson.

Swansea Under 21s bounced back from last week's defeat as they recorded a dramatic 31-29 win over their Cardiff counterparts.
