WIMG leadership award deadline extended to October 26, 2005.
The award will recognize female municipal officials for their unique and outstanding leadership in local government. Each year, the winner will be recognized for implementing a program in local government that helps to improve a city or a town's quality of life for its citizens, particularly if her leadership serves as a specific mentoring model for future women leaders.
The WIMG Leadership Award promotes the increased representation of women in local government and is designed to encourage more women to run for elected office.
A panel of guest judges representing the NLC membership, the private industry and civic leadership will choose the winner of the award.
The WIMG Leadership Award is being cosponsored by General Motors and ICMA Retirement Corporation.
The WIMG Leadership Award is open to all NLC female elected officials. The nominee does not need to be a member of the Women in Municipal Government constituency group.
Current members of the WIMG Board of Directors and WIMG Advisory Council are not eligible to be nominated for the award.
Finalists for the award will be announced in advance of the NLC Congress of Cities in Charlotte, N.C., December 6-10, 2005. The winner will be announced and honored along with the other finalists during the annual WIMG Luncheon and Membership Meeting on Friday, December 9. All award finalists must plan to be present for the award presentation.
* Nominee must be a female elected official who has demonstrated excellence in leadership and worked to help other individuals strive to achieve similar goals.
* Nominee must be a female elected official who has been actively involved with the National League of Cities or a state municipal league.
* Nominee must be a local elected female official from an NLC member city.
* Nominee must have served in a municipal elected office for at least four years.
* Nominee must be nominated by a colleague, constituent or organization.
Who Should Be Nominated
* Any female elected official who has demonstrated excellence in leadership and worked to assist other individuals achieve similar goals.
* Any female elected official who has been actively involved with the National League of Cities, especially if she has served or is serving on the various committees and councils of the National League of Cities.
NLC's Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) was formed in 1974 to serve as a forum for communication and networking among women municipal officials and their colleagues interested in addressing women's issues. It strives to raise awareness about issues of concern to women and encourages women to seek public office in their communities.
For more than three decades, WIMG has worked to ensure that women hold leadership positions within NLC and serve on its Board of Directors and other special NLC leadership groups.
WIMG has successfully forged a prominent role for women in the development and influence of NLC's National Municipal Policy and its agenda for the nation's cities and towns, by having WIMG members actively participate in a variety of leadership roles at NLC.
WIMG board meetings often have a policy-related focus and, in particular, the WIMG Annual Summer Board of Directors Meeting includes a policy development or advocacy theme.
