 WILTEL, SPRINT, COMPUSERVE, NORTHERN TELECOM
APPROVE DOWTY PRODUCT FOR FRAM RELAY NETWORKS
ANNAPOLIS JUNCTION, Md., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Public interexchange carriers WilTel, Sprint, CompuServe and Northern Telecom have approved a Dowty Communications' Frame Relay Access Device (FRAD(TM)) product for compatibility with their frame relay services.
The product, Dowty's DCP4802 FRAD(TM), is the first in a series of frame relay compatible switch and access products to be introduced. Dowty has launched an intensive program to become the industry leader in frame relay access and switching products. The results of combined research and development by Dowty's U.S. and U.K. engineering teams is a series of frame relay products designed for a wide variety of user applications to be released over the course of 1992.
According to Scott Rey, senior marketing manager at Dowty Communications, the company recognizes frame relay as an important emerging technology for customers who operate in bursty LAN-to-LAN networking environments.
"Our customers are looking for high-performance switch and access products that offer full support for frame relay services. We have already taken the first step with the introduction of the DCP4802," Rey said. "Dowty will offer a range of integrated solutions that make sense for increasingly integrated, multi-protocol environments."
The DCP4802 is a dual-port local and remote MAC layer bridge designed to take advantage of frame-relay capabilities. Unlike other bridges, it has the ability to learn Ethernet addresses and frame relay topologies for intelligent route handling.
The DCP4802 is also available with an integral DCP4857 CSU/DSU or Fractional T-1 CSU. This combination allows a digital PBX to share the same T-1 access link with an Ethernet LAN. It supports communications between Ethernet LANs via wide area networks and is designed to fit in a single slot of the Dowty UniRack 4800 multi-technology racking system.
The 4800 UniRack allows Dowty customers to combine a variety of digital and analog products in a single network managed system. In addition to the DCP4802 and DCP4857, the 4800 series includes the DCP4856 CSU/DSU and Switched 56 TIU with optional V.32 modem back-up.
WilTel's WilPak frame relay service dynamically allocates bandwidth between multiple concurrent applications, providing high throughput for each application. It's ideal for the bursty nature of most LAN traffic.
Sprint's frame relay service provides customers with high-speed bandwidth up to and including T-1. They offer two types of services, one priced on usage and other flat rated.
CompuServe's nationwide public frame relay service, FRAME-Net, provides high-speed internetworking for remote LANs, hosts, PADs, and other premise equipment supporting the frame relay interface.
Northern Telecom's DataSPAN, high-speed LAN interconnect, offers a public network alternative to private data networks. It allows local or interexchange carriers to offer end users an attractive alternative to capital intensive, private network solutions based on CPE ownership and leased lines.
Dowty Communications, headquartered in Annapolis Junction, designs, manufactures and markets a full range of local and wide area communications products for direct, OEM and distributor sales. Its products include T-1/E-1 nodal processors and multiplexers, X.25 switches and PADs, modems, CSU/DSUs, intelligent wiring hubs, LAN internetworking devices, multi-protocol terminal servers and gateways, frame relay access devices, inverse multiplexers and network management systems.
