WILSON FOODS/UFCW CONTRACT TALKS BROKEN OFF

WILSON FOODS/UFCW CONTRACT TALKS BROKEN OFF
OKLAHOMA CITY, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Doskocil Companies Incorporated

(NASDAQ: DOSK) has been notified by the United Food & Commercial Workers union that employees covered under a master agreement with Wilson Foods Corporation at the company's facilities in Oklahoma City, Logansport Ind., Cherokee, Iowa, and Birmingham, Ala. have ceased working upon expiration of the current contract at midnight, May 1.
Negotiations between the company and union officials were held throughout the month of April but were broken off Thursday, April 30 when the union negotiating team rejected the company's final proposal for a new agreement.
The company's final proposal to the union results in an enhancement in active employee earnings over the term of the proposal.
The final proposal for a three-year agreement included wage increases, a bonus payment, increased premium pay, improved funeral leave, modifications in the medical and drug program for cost containment which left basic benefits unchanged. The proposal provided for no changes to the dental and vision programs, number of paid holidays or vacation provisions. The Defined Benefit Retiree medical plan was modeled after the cost structure as approved by current retirees during recent bankruptcy proceedings.
Doskocil Companies filed for bankruptcy in March 1990 and emerged in October 1991. During this period union contracts were honored and all benefits and provisions of the contracts for active employees remained unchanged.
The company will await further communication from the union and is willing to resume talks to reach a mutually acceptable contract if requested by the union.
In the interim, the company is taking necessary steps to ensure that the needs of its customers will be met.
Doskocil specializes in processing and marketing boneless hams, sausage, bacon, and other branded and processed meat products for the food service, delicatessen and retail markets. The company also supplies pepperoni, beef and pork toppings to the pizza industry.
