WILMINGTON TRUST REPORTS RECORD THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS
WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Wilmington Trust

Corporation (NASDAQ: WILM) reported that, for the first nine months of 1992, net income was up 8 percent to $58.7 million, or $1.55 a share, vs. $54.5 million, or $1.44 a share, a year ago.
Net income for the third quarter of 1992 was a record $21.0 million. This is a 7 percent increase over the $19.6 million in net income for the third quarter of 1991. Earnings per share for the third quarter were $.56, up 8 percent from $.52 last year.
The third quarter gain was led by net interest income, which reached a quarterly record of $42.2 million, up from $39.0 million last year. The net interest margin increased to 4.69 percent, vs. 4.32 percent for the third quarter a year ago. The improvement in net interest margin is due to continuing changes in interest rates over the course of the year.
Noninterest revenues also set a quarterly record of $27.1 million, up 5 percent from $25.7 million for the third quarter a year ago. Operating expenses for the quarter increased 5 percent to $37.8 million from $36.0 million last year.
On Sept. 30, 1992, the loan loss reserve was $46.2 million, or 1.55 percent of total loans outstanding. On the same date, nonaccruing loans totaled $16.1 million with other real estate owned amounting to $33.6 million. At the end of the third quarter, nonperforming assets (including other real estate owned) amounted to 1.7 percent of total loans outstanding, which remains below industry averages.
The year-to-date return on assets reached 1.89 percent on an annualized basis, up from 1.77 percent for the same period last year, and return on equity on an annualized basis was 20.57 percent compared to 21.45 percent a year ago. Wilmington Trust continues to rank among the top banks in the nation in both key indices of financial performance.
As of Sept. 30, 1992, total assets were $4.2 billion and deposits were $3.3 billion. Stockholders' equity reached $384.5 million.
Chairman and CEO Leonard W. Quill stated, "We are quite pleased with the consistency and stability of our earnings performance, particularly in light of continuing soft economic conditions."
