Mr. Nelson said, "We are proud to bring FARM AID VI to Ames, Iowa, the heart of the heartland, and that TNN will once again bring FARM AID to the nation." Citing an all-star line-up of many of today's top musical entertainers, he commented, "The concert promises to be a great musical event and a tremendous show of support for America's family farmers. What we accomplish here at FARM AID VI will reach beyond the corn fields of Iowa to every American. Every family farmer at work in the fields means more jobs in the factories and businesses of Des Moines, Detroit and Los Angeles. An investment in our family farmers is an investment in a strong American economy."
Mr. Nelson declared that FARM AID VI, "is planting the seeds of change that will allow family farms to flourish in this new political climate. Family farmers have the solutions that will provide America with good jobs, safe food, and a clean environment. FARM AID is honored to provide the sound and stage to amplify the voices of the American people -- the feeders and the eaters. Starting here in the heartland, we will make sure that family farmers lead the way when the folks in Washington sit down to make a new farm policy."
Since FARM AID was founded in 1985 by Willie Nelson, John Mellancamp and Neil Young, the organization has granted over $10.5 million to more than 100 farm groups, hotlines, churches, and service organizations in 43 states, according to Carolyn Mugar, executive director of FARM AID. Funds have been distributed for emergency needs, education, outreach, hotlines, legal assistance, land stewardships and self-help projects.
Joining Willie Nelson at the press conference were Gov. Terry Bransted, State Secretary of Agriculture Dale Cochran and Ames Mayor Larry Curtis who presented Mr. Nelson with a key to the city. Iowa State University Vice President Reid Crawford welcomed Nelson and FARM AID, and dozens of farm leaders thanked Nelson, and FARM AID for joining in the fight to support family farms.
