WILLIAMS PIPE LINE COMPANY EVALUATING NEW PIPELINE PROJECT

TULSA, Okla., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Pipe Line Co. has signed an agreement to jointly evaluate construction of a new pipeline that would bring Canadian crude oil into new markets in the midwestern United States.
Tulsa-based Williams Pipe Line and Interprovincial Pipe Line System Inc., of Edmondton, Alberta, are evaluating a joint proposal to build a 100,000 barrel-a-day crude oil pipeline.
The proposed system would connect an existing pipeline operated by Interprovincial's U.S. affiliate, Lakehead Pipe Line Partners L.P., at Lockport, Ill., near Chicago, with a pipeline distribution hub at Patoka, Ill., about 200 miles south.
Williams Pipe Line already has assets, including more than 200 miles of right of way, in the area.
A joint engineering study of the pipeline construction project is under way. Upon its completion this summer, Williams Pipe Line and Interprovincial will seek long-term contracts for shipments on the system. The commitments from crude oil shippers are key to the pipeline's construction.
The proposed pipeline would provide additional outlets for Canadian crude oil. Canadian crude generally sells at prices below comparable- quality U.S. crude in the Midwest, partly because of its relatively limited market access.
If Williams Pipe Line and Interprovincial commit to the pipeline project, construction is projected to begin in early 1994. First volumes would flow on the new system later that year.
Williams Pipe Line, a subsidiary of The Williams Companies Inc. (NYSE: WMB; PSE), operates 8,500 miles of petroleum liquids pipelines throughout the Midwest.
The Williams Companies, listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges under the symbol WMB, operates 27,000 miles of petroleum and natural gas pipelines, major natural gas gathering and processing facilities, and a national telecommunications company that specializes in serving other carriers and businesses.
