WILLIAMS CONTROLS, INC. ANNOUNCES NEW VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER

 PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Controls, Inc. (NASDAQ: WMCO) announced today the appointment of Bradley R. Petersen to the position of vice president and general manager. Petersen is a graduate engineer from the University of Washington (BS), and holds a master of science degree in management from Baker University (MBA). In his new position, Petersen will be reporting directly to Thomas W. Itin, chairman and president, and will be responsible for directing all aspects of operations at the Portland facility of Williams Controls, Inc. including design, manufacturing, sales and distribution, and finance.
 Petersen comes most recently from Portland-based Freightliner Corporation, a major original equipment truck manufacturer, and one of Williams Controls' largest customers. He brings a broad background in management and technical experience, including past positions as a manager of Management Control Systems at Carnation Company, regional general manager with GranTree Corporation, and quality assurance coordinator at ARA Services. At Freightliner for the past 12 years, Petersen held various management positions in engineering, customer field service, supplier warranty management, and corporate purchasing.
 Itin, chairman and chief executive officer of Williams Controls, Inc., stated, "We are pleased to have someone of Brad Petersen's experience and capabilities lead the management team at Williams Controls in Portland.  Itin also reconfirmed that the company continues to buy back its common shares and warrants in the open market for the benefit of Williams Controls' 401 (K) plan and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
