            WILLIAM T. FITZGERALD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM
                     COOPER TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY
    FINDLAY, Ohio, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- William T. (Bill) Fitzgerald, 65, today announced his retirement as president and chief operating officer of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: CTB).  Fitzgerald also announced his retirement from the company's board of directors.  The announcements were made at the company's regular board meeting and were effective immediately.
    Fitzgerald began his career with the company as a field sales representative in 1953.  In the early stages of his 38-year career with the company, he rose through the ranks of sales and marketing management and was elected vice president of marketing in 1968.  He then served as president of the company's tire division from 1970 through 1989.
    Fitzgerald also served as executive vice president of the company from 1982 through 1989 when he was elected president and chief operating officer of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.  He also served on the company's board for 21 years, having been first elected as a director in 1970.
    Fitzgerald is a native Akronite who graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1944.  Following a term of duty in the U.S. Navy, he enrolled in the University of Akron in 1946 and graduated, with distinction, in 1950.  He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1969 and completed course work in management and marketing with the American Management Association.  He has chaired AMA seminars on sales and marketing subjects, including the Field Sales Management Course.
    In 1987 he was the recipient of the Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Distinguished Business Alumni Award from the University of Akron.  In 1988 he was chosen by the Toledo chaper of the Planning Forum as Planner of the Year for excellence in planning and execution.
    Fitzgerald was instrumental in forming the Findlay-Hancock County Community Development Foundation, was the Foundation's first president and served as president for two years.  He served on the executive committee and board through October 1991.  He is past president of the Put-Han-Sen area council Boy Scouts of America.
    Other affiliations include member American Management Association, membership in the Findlay Country Club, Findlay Skeet Club, Palmetto-Pine Country Club and U.S. Power Squadron.
