NEW YORK, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced the acquisition of the Belhaven Press from Pinter Publishers in the U.K. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Michael Dixon, publishing director of Wiley Europe, said that the addition of the highly regarded Belhaven list -- which includes titles in environmental science and geography -- enhances Wiley's preeminence in the field of earth and environmental science titles. The purchase also allows Wiley to expand its established geography program and to reach new markets worldwide. "I am also very pleased to announce that Dr. Iain Stevenson, who created and has developed the Belhaven list over the past seven years, will be joining Wiley to carry on the good work," Dr. Dixon added.
Charles R. Ellis, Wiley's president and chief executive officer, said that this transaction is part of the publishing company's strategy to focus on its core businesses. "We're redeploying our assets to build on Wiley's traditional areas of strength. For instance, we recently decided to divest some peripheral operations in Australia and Canada. At the same time, we saw in Belhaven the chance to make an acquisition that combines quality, strategic fit and growth opportunities. Our purchase last week of the QED computer book publishing program in the U.S. was another excellent opportunity," Mr. Ellis explained.
Dr. Frances Pinter of Pinter Publishers said, "We are extremely proud to have provided the right environment for the pioneering days of Belhaven. And now we are delighted with its new home at Wiley. It is with a touch of sadness that we say goodbye to our Belhaven authors, and Dr. Iain Stevenson in particular. However, the company's commitment to quality and originality in the social sciences and humanities will continue through the Pinter and Leicester University Press imprints."
