WHY DO COMPANIES USE TEMPS? NEW SURVEY REVEALS THAT STRATEGIC APPROACH IS GAINING POPULARITY

MENLO PARK, Calif., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Accountemps:
The increased use of temporary workers has been in the headlines lately, but exactly when and why are temps called into a company? Nearly half (47 percent) of chief financial officers (CFOs) in a recent Accountemps survey said the primary reason their companies use temporary help is to staff short-term projects and to assist when workloads peak.
The survey was developed by Accountemps, the world's largest temporary staffing service for accounting, bookkeeping and information systems professionals. It was conducted by an independent research firm which polled 1,000 executives from a random sample of all U.S. companies with more than 20 employees.
Executives were asked: "Which of the following is the single most important reason why your company uses or would use temporary workers?" Their responses:
For short-term projects and peak work periods 47 percent
 For absent employees 17 percent
To evaluate a prospective full-time employee 15 percent
To avoid excessive overtime & burnout 8 percent
 To save money 7 percent
 Don't know 6 percent
 100 percent
"The results suggest that managers today are taking a strategic approach to staffing. They are striving to grow more 'intelligently' in order to avoid losing permanent staff during down cycles," said Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps.
This shift to more sophisticated temp usage is supported by the fact that more than twice the number of respondents adopt a proactive approach versus a reactive one, he added.
"The findings also indicate that many employers view temp work as a key entree to permanent positions at their companies," Messmer said. "This practice gives both employers and employees the opportunity to make an informed decision about a prospective working relationship."
While using temporaries for peak workloads is inherently a cost- effective technique, it's noteworthy that only seven percent of respondents cited cost savings as the main reason for temp use.
"Companies seem to be more interested in avoiding the trauma of overhiring and then firing, than they are with merely cutting personnel costs," Messmer added.
There are more than 150 Accountemps offices in the United States, Canada and Europe.
