WHITE CASTLE SYSTEM, INC., STATEMENT

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from White Castle System, Inc. regarding the FTC charges that it made false and misleading claims about its fast food containers:
In continuation of White Castle's efforts to work with our regulatory agencies we agreed with the FTC that we would not use the word "recyclable" on our hamburger cartons. The word "Recyclable" was used on our hamburger cartons from approximately 1990 to December 1992.
After receiving notice of the FTC inquiry, White Castle voluntarily provided numerous documents and files related to our food packaging. Both parties agreed not to waste valuable government and private resources and executed the consent order. In this resolution, the parties agreed that no laws were violated, and that White Castle did nothing wrong. White Castle agreed not to use the word "recyclable" on its hamburger cartons. This will insure that all of our loyal customers will understand that, although our hamburger containers are made of 100% Recycled Paperboard with a minimum of 35% Post-Consumer Content, there are very few facilities that will recycle our hamburger cartons after they have been used to carry food.
We are continuing our work with the environment. We have recently completed the EPA's Green Lights Program in which we have reduced our consumption of energy. Our paper carton supplier, Jefferson Smurfit, is working closely with governmental agencies to increase the use of recycling of paper that has been used to store food.
