WHEELABRATOR TECHNOLOGIES INC. ACQUIRES HPD INC., EXPANDING WATER TREATMENT CAPABILITIES

HAMPTON, N.H., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (WTI) (NYSE: WTI) today announced that it has acquired HPD Incorporated, a $50 million Chicago-based company specializing in the design, engineering and building of industrial waste water processing systems. The acquisition significantly augments Wheelabrator's position in the international water and waste water services industries.
HPD's process and application engineering services and products, such as evaporators, crystallizers, electrodialysis and membranes, will enable Wheelabrator to evaluate and analyze customer waste water process streams and design and build complete treatment systems that meet or exceed environmental and regulatory compliance standards.
"Combined with the company's extensive resources and experience, the HPD acquisition positions Wheelabrator as the total solution provider in treating municipal and industrial water and waste water," said John M. Kehoe Jr., president and chief operating officer of Wheelabrator Technologies. "HPD's strong engineering staff and its unique systems complement our existing water and waste water businesses significantly. We are now in the position to identify problems, fix them and then operate and even re-finance the facility, all depending on our customer's needs. Strategically, this makes Wheelabrator a top international competitor in these businesses and enhances the services we offer to customers worldwide."
HPD principal John Karoly will join WTI's Engineered Systems group to lead the HPD integration and overall business. The company and its 160 employees will continue primary operations in Naperville, Ill., a Chicago suburb, with direct sales offices, subsidiaries, licensees and sales agents distributing products and serving customers on a global basis.
Already one of America's largest private contract operators of municipal and industrial water and waste water treatment plants, Wheelabrator Technologies also provides state-of-the-art treatment technologies and equipment and daily manages the safe disposal or reuse of more than 1,200 dry tons of waste water biosolids, making it one of the largest biosolids management firms in the country.
Wheelabrator Technologies, a multi-faceted environmental services company, is a majority-owned subsidiary of WMX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: WMX), the world's leading environmental services company. In addition to its trash-to-energy and cogeneration capabilities, Wheelabrator Technologies offers premier environmental engineering services and supplies air pollution control systems for industrial and utility applications. It also provides composting and a range of water and waste water treatment services including biosolids management.
