WHEELABRATOR TECHNOLOGIES' BIO GRO JOINT VENTURE AWARDED
 BALTIMORE SLUDGE CONTRACT
ANNAPOLIS, Md., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (WTI) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Bio Gro Systems, Inc., has been awarded, through a joint venture, a 20-year contract by the City of Baltimore to design, construct, finance and operate a sludge pelletizer facility.
The $34-million facility will dewater and convert sewage sludge to dry fertilizer pellets via thermal processing. Slated to begin processing sludge in 1994, the facility will employ more than 200 construction workers for up to 18 months, and create employment for an operating crew of 18 to 20 full-time workers for the 20-year term.
Bio Gro is the managing partner in the joint venture, which includes Robert Clay Industrial Supply, Inc., a Baltimore-area minority-owned firm. Bio Gro, one of Wheelabrator Technologies' integrated environmental services firms, operates more than 40 sludge management programs for public and private clients throughout the United States. The firm specializes in land application of sludge and offers a range of environmental technologies including dewatering, composting, lime stabilization, thermal treatment, land reclamation and other services.
The pelletizer facility for Baltimore will process 650,000 gallons of liquid sludge per day, converting it into 55 tons per day of dry, environmentally safe organic fertilizer pellets for home and farm use. The facility, located at the city's Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant, will employ dewatering and indirect drying technology, using an energy-efficient, patented process developed jointly by Bio Gro Systems and Seghers Engineering N.V., Belgium.
"This is a state-of-the-art sludge dryer, particulary with respect to air quality control," said Rodney C. Gilbert, president of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. "We expect this technology to outperform any other drying technology in meeting air pollution control requirements."
Bill Blanchet, president of Bio Gro Systems, added, "We have received a lot of interest from numerous municipal wastewater utilities such as Baltimore's, which are increasingly hard pressed to find environmentally acceptable answers to their sludge management needs."
Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. is the nation's leading provider of comprehensive environmental services, including sludge management, water and wastewater treatment services, trash to energy, cogeneration, and composting systems.
