WHEELABRATOR SELECTED TO NEGOTIATE MECKLENBURG ENERGY PROJECT
OAK BROOK, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. (NYSE: WTI) today announced that it was selected by Mecklenburg County, N.C., to begin negotiations on a contract to design, construct, and operate a 600-ton-per-day trash-to-energy facility in Charlotte, N.C. The plant will be owned by Mecklenburg County.
The value of the contract is estimated to be $200 million.
Two Wheelabrator Technologies' subsidiaries, Wheelabrator Environmental Systems and RUST International Corp., combined to provide the winning bid for the state-of-the-art Mecklenburg facility.
Wheelabrator Environmental will oversee development support to the County and provide operations and maintenance services while RUST will be the engineering and construction contractor. The facility will sell steam to an adjacent General Tire manufacturing facility and electricity to Duke Power, while providing Mecklenburg County with safe and reliable solid waste disposal well into the next century.
The county's schedule calls for construction to begin in the summer of 1993 with the facility in operation by 1996.
"We're delighted that Mecklenburg County's strongly competitive procurement has enabled us to provide its residents with the most environmentally sensitive and reliable technology available," said Phillip B. Rooney, chairman and chief executive of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. "The Wheelabrator-Mecklenburg County project will be another in a long history of successful public-private partnerships involving Wheelabrator which address the long-term waste management needs involving communities throughout our country."
