The Flock

Simon L., singer

Simon L., singer for Worcester's popular '80s cover band, the Flock (and the alter ego of Lucky Dog Music Hall co-owner Erick Godin), expresses confusion when asked what's on his iPod.

"I don't know what this iPod is," he says. "Is that what Michael Jackson used to sleep in? If it has something to do with music, I do have my cassette player."

And, of course, he has 125 cassette singles, or as they were colloquially known back in the day, "cassingles." And, given his band's oeuvre, it's not surprising that the list is a veritable VH1 flashback of the songs we were listening to when we were rocking the hairspray and sunglasses for the complete Duran Duran look. Ahem. Assuming we did such a thing, and assuming there aren't any pictures posted on Facebook. But we digress.

Many old favorites make the list: the Cure, David Bowie, Dream Academy, Mister Mister. Just looking at the list is enough to make one want to spontaneously erupt into a rousing round of "Taaaake .... these broken wiiiiings ... and learn to fly agaaaain ... learn to live so freeee."

"They are the most popular songs out there at this instant," says Simon. "If you DON'T have these cassingles, you are judged to be a complete and utter loser by everyone I know."

1. "Fascination Street," by the Cure

2. "Saved By Zero," by the Fixx

3. "Life in a Northern Town," by Dream Academy

4. "Let's Dance," by David Bowie

5. "Relax," by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

6. "Broken Wings," by Mister Mister

7. "Danger Zone," by Kenny Loggins

8. "I Think I'm in Love," by Eddie Money

9. "Africa," by Toto

10. "Our Love's in Jeopardy," by Greg Kihn

Guilty pleasure: Says Simon, "I have the Cassingle of `Come On Eileen' from Dexy's Midnight Runners. I am completely embarrassed to even write that down. It's so 1982, and it was one of my first Cassingles given to me by my Mom."
