WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK ...

. Keep watering new plants but be economical as well and try to use grey water where possible. Continue to deadhead plants such as delphinium and dahlias. Do not neglect hanging baskets, deadhead, feed and continue to water to prolong well into autumn . It is time to start thinking about spring. Now is the time to choose and buy spring flowering bulbs, plant soon after purchasing to reduce the risk of disease. Clear old crops from the vegetable patch and remove debris to compost heap. Do not dig it over, but sow green manures on the empty ground. This will prevent loss of nutrients and protect the soil from the winter weather. Cover any leafy vegetable crops with bird proof netting. Harvest sweet corn, beans, courgettes cabbage and cauliflowers
