WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY; INVESTIGATION EXPOSES OLD TRAFFORD BUYS; Manchester United paid THREE times over the odds for Martial...and shelled out more than any team in Europe on transfer failures; 'UNITED PAID TOO MUCH'.
Byline: DAVID McDONNELL
MANCHESTER UNITED have been accused of paying three times over the odds for Anthony Martial - and being the biggest money wasters in Europe.
United paid Monaco PS36million for Martial, rising to a potential PS58m with add-ons, making him the most expensive teenager in world football.
But an independent transfer review found his real transfer value to be PS11.6m just weeks before the deadline day deal that took him to Old Trafford. Esteve Calzada, CEO of Prime Time Sport who oversaw the review, said: "There were rumours that Barcelona would take him for PS14.6m.
"We valued him based on statistics at 16m Euros (PS11.6m). That means either we made a very bad valuation or the market has gone crazy!
"With John Stones too, the numbers being discussed were far higher than we valued him on the list."
United have also wasted the most money on transfers over the past three years, says the survey carried out with Soccerex. It found PS560m worth of players were used in half or less minutes for their club s.
United, who spent PS117.7m, topped the list of clubs with players who failed to succeed. Spurs, (PS100.9m) were second.
The biggest flop was Angel Di Maria (left) with Marouane Fellaini second.
