FREE apps often end up costing you - a new study shows many are happy to start spending once they're hooked on 'freemium' titles.

The report from consumer market research company NPD claimed four out of 10 gamers who played a freemium title went on to make a purchase within the game, with women "significantly more likely" than men to play this kind of title. And the reach of these games is spreading, with the study suggesting well over a third of US citizens aged over two are now playing a freemium title of some kind. So how's your smartphone shaping up? In the charts this week, The Witcher 2 seems to have cast its spell over the gaming community, entering the chart in the number one spot in its first week of release.
