WESTON CAPTURES $22 MILLION FOR ONGOING ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP TASKS AT TWO U.S. AIR FORCE BASES

WEST CHESTER, Pa., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Roy F. Weston, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTNA) (WESTON)(R), an international environmental services firm, four new assignments totalling $22 million, to expand remedial field investigations and cleanup program design efforts at Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth, N.H., and at Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, Calif., it was announced today.
The environmental welfare of both installations is being addressed by the Air Force's Installation Restoration Program initiated for all U.S. bases. However, activity accelerated at Pease AFB which closed in 1991, becoming the first major domestic military site to begin conversion for civilian use under the federal Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990.
According to Edward S. Barnes, WESTON project director, "WESTON has been conducting hazardous waste remedial investigations, corrective action feasibility studies, pilot treatability actions and related environmental assessments on Pease and Travis sites since 1984."
Barnes said the environmental concerns are primarily the results of routine base operations over time such as fuel spills, solvent disposal, as well as aircraft, vehicle and facilities maintenance.
At Travis, WESTON, under a new Air Force task order for $4.6 million, will continue ongoing remedial investigations and feasibility studies, and provide corrective action documentation. Specific assignments include soil gas surveys, construction of new monitoring wells, soil and water sampling, and developing a base-wide treatability study strategy.
WESTON's three new tasks at Pease, valued at $17.4 million, also encompass expanded remedial investigation involving groundwater monitoring, sediment testing, soil sampling and treatability studies. In addition, six new sites, including a former ordnance disposal site and an outdoor engine test area, were added to WESTON's responsibilities. WESTON will also design final remedial actions for a base landfill, fire department training area, a jet engine test cell and two maintenance facilities.
With corporate headquarters in West Chester, WESTON is an international environmental engineering, design and consulting firm specializing in analytical services, remediation, facility construction and operations, technical information management and major program services. Through its U.S. network of 45 offices and laboratories, WESTON serves the environmental needs of domestic and multinational companies, department-level federal organizations, state agencies and municipalities. The company's European operations are based in Cork, Ireland, and Torino, Italy.
