WESTLAND AND MCDONNELL DOUGLAS TEAM FOR UNITED KINGDOM ATTACK HELICOPTER PROGRAM

 WESTLAND AND MCDONNELL DOUGLAS TEAM
FOR UNITED KINGDOM ATTACK HELICOPTER PROGRAM
MESA, Ariz., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co. announced today that it will apply to the U.S. government for a license to transfer technical data for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter to the United Kingdom.
The license will allow the company to provide its U.K. partner, Westland Helicopters Ltd., with details of the manufacturing technology involved in the aircraft's construction.
Westland, the United Kingdom's only helicopter manufacturer, and McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co. originally signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Apache in 1989. This latest announcement is the next step in a process leading to a joint bid from the two companies to supply the Apache to the British Army.
The U.K. Ministry of Defence announced its intention to procure an attack helicopter last July and invited suitable companies to register their interest. A formal Request for Proposals is expected later this year.
Given a go-ahead from the U.S. government, McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) and Westland expect to reach a detailed agreement by the spring.
