WESTINGHOUSE TO UNVEIL MANUFACTURING DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY

WESTINGHOUSE TO UNVEIL MANUFACTURING DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY
Event: Public unveiling of a special manufacturing development laboratory for a new energy technology -- the Westinghouse solid-oxide fuel cell, the most advanced of these environmentally benign power generation devices being readied for commercialization in the 1990's. Westinghouse Chairman Paul E. Lego will assess the role of the solid-oxide fuel cell in the company's future, cut the ribbon on the first generating unit built at the facility -- for a consortium of Japanese utilities -- and answer related questions. A tour of the facility and technical Q&A for interested media will follow.
Time: 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 13 (continental breakfast at 9:30). Tour will end no later than 11:20.
Place: Tech One Park (formerly USS Technical Center), Monroeville, Pa., about 25 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh.
Other Participants: Dr. Isaac Barpal, Westinghouse vice president, science & technology, and members of his staff will provide additional perspective on the company's long-term effort to bring this clean and efficient method of power generation to commercial readiness.
Background: New Technology Week described the future of fuel cells in an article just last week (Nov. 25 issue) this way: "The market for stationary fuel cell electric generating stations is expected to expand greatly by the turn of the century. -- Indeed, the perfection and commercialization of fuel cell technologies over the next decade is expected to lead to a revolution in the way electric utilities around the globe meet future load demand."
CONTACT: Robert J. Benke, 412-642-3321, or Paul B. Jones, 412-642-3713, both of Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
