WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES LAYOFFS

BALTIMORE, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The cancellation of a key military electronics program at Westinghouse's Electronic Systems business unit here will mean the layoff of approximately 460 employees at the company's BWI Airport and Hunt Valley sites by the end of February.
Layoff notices are being issued today to most of the employees impacted by the Navy's decision to cancel production of an electronic countermeasures program known as the Airborne Self-Protection Jammer (ASPJ). Westinghouse and ITT Avionics, of Clifton, N.J., had been jointly producing the ASPJ, which is an aircraft-mounted electronic countermeasures system designed to protect pilots and aircraft from hostile radar and weapons systems.
Westinghouse last week advised employees of the likelihood of layoffs if the company was unsuccessful in having the Navy's decision to cancel the radar jammer program either reversed or converted to a "stop work" order.
The company has worked closely with the members of the Maryland Congressional delegation and their staffs to keep the ASPJ program alive. The delegation has urged Defense Secretary Les Aspin to delay the cancellation order so that the program could be reviewed in depth. At this time, however, the program remains cancelled.
Westinghouse will provide comprehensive outplacement services to assist affected personnel in finding new employment including counseling in resume preparation and interviewing skills techniques. A resource center equipped with personal computers, telephones and stationery supplies will also be provided to aid employees in their job search.
