WESTINGHOUSE AWARDED CONTRACTS TOTALING $200 MILLION
 FOR POWER GENERATING PLANTS
ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) today announced it has been awarded contracts for more than $200 million to supply TransCanada PipeLines with two 150-megawatt power plants in Ontario.
Westinghouse will supply the two combined-cycle power plants, on a turnkey basis, in North Bay and Kapuskasing, Ontario. The plants will include W501D5 combustion turbines and Westinghouse-designed steam turbine generators. This equipment will be combined with a heat recovery boiler to provide maximum energy generation efficiency.
"We are pleased that a leading natural gas transport company such as TransCanada PipeLines has recognized the world-class performance of our W501D5 combustion turbines and the value that Westinghouse provides as a turnkey supplier of power projects," said Frank R. Bakos, vice president and general manager of the Westinghouse Power Generation business unit. "This order brings to six the number of 150-megawatt reference plant projects sold by Westinghouse this year," he said.
Major combustion turbine components will be manufactured in Westinghouse's facility in Hamilton, Ontario. Other manufacturing will be performed at Westinghouse facilities in Pensacola, Fla., Charlotte, N.C. and Winston-Salem, N.C. Westinghouse will work with local Canadian engineering and construction companies to implement the projects.
"The Westinghouse-built plants will utilize waste heat from TransCanada's pipeline compressors at North Bay and Kapuskasing and Western Canadian natural gas as the energy sources for power generation in a combined cycle," said Dave Russell, vice president of power generation and projects for TransCanada PipeLines.
"We will be producing an important new source of electricity for the Northern Ontario region using an economical, highly-efficient and environmentally-preferred technology," Russell said.
The W501D5 combustion turbines are among the best performing turbines in the world. During the past five years, they have achieved a cumulative average availability of 95 percent and an average reliability of 98 percent. Westinghouse, a world leader in the power generation business, has supplied over 280,000 megawatts of power generating capacity.
