WESTINGHOUSE AWARDED $54 MILLION CONTRACT FOR POWER GENERATING EQUIPMENT IN COLOMBIA

ORLANDO, Fla., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Electric Corporation (NYSE: WX) today announced that a Colombian-based consortium has awarded it a $54 million contract for power generating equipment.
The Westinghouse Power Generation Business Unit will supply its Model 501D5 combustion turbine, plus a steam turbine, electrical generators, a plant control system, and related equipment and services for a 150-megawatt combined cycle plant project to be located in Las Flores, Barranquilla, Colombia.
The consortium, which will own and operate the plant, consists of Banco Ganadero; Consorcio Colombiano Industrial S.A.; and Compania Sevillana de Electricidad, S.A. The electricity produced by the unit will be purchased by the Colombian utility Corporacion Electrica de la Costa Atlantica-Corelca.
"This agreement marks the first time a Colombian utility will purchase power from an independent power producer," said Manuel Roberto Manotas, vice president international of Banco Ganadero. "This is also the largest industrial project ever financed by a group of Colombian banks," he said.
"This project will make a significant contribution to the economic growth of Colombia," said Frank R. Bakos, vice president and general manager of Westinghouse's Powerrst independent power project serving a utility, and we are committed to its success."
The combustion turbine and generators will be manufactured in Westinghouse's integrated manufacturing facilities in Pensacola, Fla.; Charlotte, N.C.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Fort Payne, Ala.; and Hamilton, Ontario.
In a combined cycle plant, the exhaust heat produced by the combustion turbine drives a steam turbine generator, increasing the plant's efficiency and output. The 100-megawatt combustion turbine unit is expected to begin operation later this year. Following the addition of the steam turbine, the plant is scheduled to begin generating 150 megawatts of power in late 1994.
"This project will provide Colombia with 100 MW of power this year and an additional 50 MW in 1994. Westinghouse is uniquely suited to deliver on such fast track projects," said Randy H. Zwirn, general manager of Westinghouse's Power Generation Projects Division.
Westinghouse is the leading supplier of power generating equipment in Colombia, and has supplied more than 280,000 megawatts of power generation equipment worldwide.
Banco Ganadero is the largest Colombian bank with more than 150 branches in Colombia and is based in Bogota, Colombia, with subsidiaries in Panama City, Panama, Caracus, Venezuela, and Miami. Consorcio Colombiano Industrial S.A. is based in Cartegena, Colombia; and Compania Sevillana de Electricidad, S.A. is based in Sevilla, Spain.
