 WESTINGHOUSE, ENDESA, EMPRESARIOS AGRUPADOS
AWARDED NUCLEAR UPGRADE PROGRAMS FOR BULGARIA
BRUSSELS, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Westinghouse Energy Systems International (WESI) and two leading Spanish energy companies today announced that they have received contracts to perform engineering and analysis services aimed at helping Bulgaria's nuclear plants to more closely comply with Western safety and performance standards.
The European Economic Community (EEC) is funding a $12 million program to determine the necessary steps for upgrading the four oldest reactors at Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear station.
The Bulgarian Energy Committee and an EEC-appointed international evaluation committee of nuclear experts selected WESI and the Spanish national utility company Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. (ENDESA) to perform accident and safety analysis and risk assessment for the units. The committees also selected a team of WESI and the Spanish architect-engineer Empresarios Agrupados S.A. to perform seismic analysis for the Kozloduy reactors. Westinghouse and the Spanish companies were chosen for these programs following a lengthy evaluation of bids from leading German, French, Italian and Belgian suppliers.
"Westinghouse has performed many large-scale enhancement programs for nuclear operating plants, including the Beznau station in Switzerland and the Jose Cabrera plant in Spain," said Fernando Naredo, president of the Brussels-based Westinghouse Energy Systems International. "We specialize in meeting the unique requirements of our utility customers, and are well-prepared to work with our Spanish partners to enhance the performance of Kozloduy."
Forty-four percent of the nuclear reactors in western and eastern Europe incorporate Westinghouse pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology and have been supplied by Westinghouse or its European associates.
ENDESA, one of the world's most successful utility companies, plays a key role in three Spanish nuclear plants which collectively generate approximately 3,000 megawatts of electricity. ENDESA is currently the single largest generator of electricity in Spain, and is involved in many energy generation projects worldwide.
Empresarios Agrupados is one of Spain's leading architect-engineers, and has been a major participant in the highly successful Spanish nuclear program. The company is currently a leader in supplying Western architect-engineering expertise to eastern European reactors.
In November 1991, the Bulgarian Energy Committee awarded a contract valued at $10 million to Westinghouse to process low-level radioactive waste at the Kozloduy station. Under terms of the contract, Westinghouse will design and start-up eastern Europe's first low-level radioactive waste processing facility. The facility, to be built and operated in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines, is scheduled for operation in 1992.
