WESTIN HOTELS & RESORTS RESPONDS TO HURRICANE ANDREW CRISIS

WESTIN HOTELS & RESORTS RESPONDS TO HURRICANE ANDREW CRISIS
SEATTLE, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Families and businesses impacted by the devastation from Hurricane Andrew are now receiving assistance from Westin Hotels & Resorts, the company announced today. Two of its hotels in Florida are playing major roles in the recovery effort.
In the Miami area, the Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables was designated as one of the cities command centers during the hurricane. Since it is one of the closest open hotels to where most of the damage occurred, insurance adjusters and police, fire and emergency units, along with their families, are currently stationed at the hotel to aid in recovery efforts.
The Biltmore Hotel is operating at near capacity by providing temporary housing to more than 250 people who are charged with responding to the crisis. The hotel is also preparing over 1,000 meals each day.
The situation in Miami is particularly unusual in that The Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables has been closed for several years and was scheduled to re-open as Westin's first operating franchise hotel on Sept. 22. In the aftermath of the hurricane, the hotel has opened earlier than scheduled and is currently accepting reservations from groups and individual travelers.
The Westin Hotel, Cypress Creek in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has established a drop-off center for community donations including food, water, clothing and baby supplies, and is providing supplies to a camp of migrant families. The hotel serves as the central location to receive contributions from other Westin hotels. According to hotel management, basic needs, such as food and water, are being met and long-term needs, such as shelter should be addressed with monetary contributions.
Several Westin hotels around the United States and Canada have already responded to this challenge by collecting donations and supplies from their employees and communities which are being shipped to Fort Lauderdale.
The Westin Resort, Vail, Colorado, and The Westin Hotel, Tabor Center, Denver, have worked with Denver radio station KS-104 to collect two semi-trailer truck loads of supplies which are being delivered to Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. Additional shipments are being arranged by the Westin Mission Hills Resort, Rancho Mirage, California; The Westin Paso del Norte, El Paso, Texas; The Westin Renaissance Center, Detroit; Walt Disney World Swan, Orlando, Fla.; The Westin Hotel, Ottawa; and Westin's worldwide headquarters in Seattle.
Concerned citizens interested in assisting the effort are encouraged to contact their local Red Cross or provide monetary contributions to the Westin Hotel, Cypress Creek Hurricane Andrew Relief Fund, c/o The Westin Hotel, Cypress Creek, Interstate 90 at Cypress Creek Road, 400 Corporate Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33334-3642. Westin Hotels & Resorts operates 75 properties in 15 countries worldwide.
