WESTIN HOTELS & RESORTS REPORTS ON THE WESTIN KAUAI
AT KAUAI LAGOONS AFTER HURRICANE INIKI
SEATTLE, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Westin Hotels & Resorts:
 WHERE:
The Westin Kauai at Kauai Lagoons on a half-mile stretch of beach fronting Kalapaki Bay. A 846-room resort on 800 acres of botanical gardens and two 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses.
 WHEN:
Friday, Sept. 11, 5 to 8 p.m. The resort was 80 percent full at the time of the hurricane; guests were evacuated to the ballroom. All employees and guests are safe.
 WHAT:
Damage was limited to blown-out windows, some flooding on the first floor and impact to the resort's landscaping.
As a result, the resort is temporarily closed until services are restored and the full extent of any damages can be assessed.
 WHO:
James Treadway, president of Westin Hotels & Resorts, North America left Seattle, the worldwide headquarters for Westin, on Saturday morning and arrived on the scene Sunday after flying to Honolulu and charting a 65-foot fishing boat for the 12-hour trip to Kauai.
Notable guests at the resort at the time of the incident included Steven Spielberg and his production crew who took shelter at the resort during the filming of "Jurassic Park."
A relief fund has been established by Westin Hotels & Resorts to aid its employees and their families affected by the disaster. The "Ohana Fund" is based on a traditional Hawaiian term meaning family or togetherness.
 OTHER:
The Westin Kauai has received numerous awards including the AAA Four-Diamond award and the Gold Key and Gold Tee awards from Meetings & Conventions. The resort was also ranked in the "Top 100" by Conde Nast Traveler in 1991.
