WESTERN WASTE REACHES AGREEMENT TO RECEIVE OUT-OF-COUNTY WASTE
 AT ITS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LANDFILL
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Waste Industries (NYSE: WW) and Riverside County, Calif., have signed an agreement which enables Western's El Sobrante Landfill to receive approximately 1,000 tons per day of the company's out-of-county waste. The landfill is located near the City of Riverside and approximately 50 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
"For the first time, we will be able to feed some of our out-of- county wastestream to our own landfill rather than someone else's," said Kosti Shirvanian, president and chief executive officer.
As a result of waste compaction techniques and efficient space utilization, the 160-acre landfill's capacity has been increased by 1.8 million tons over the original capacity of 6.2 million tons. Under the agreement with the county, 60 percent of this increased capacity or about 1.1 million tons is available to Western Waste for out-of-country waste.
Waste accepted at the landfill averages about 1,000 tons per day and the landfill is permitted to receive up to 2,000 tons per day. Under the agreement, the company may take in waste up to this daily permit limitation.
Western Waste owns the 1,020-acre expansion area contiguous to the original 160-acre site which, if permitted, will add more than 80 million tons to the landfill's capacity. The company is in the process of permitting this expansion area.
Western Waste Industries operates seven landfills throughout the Sunbelt. The company is a leading integrated solid waste management company, providing collection, recycling, composting and disposal services for commercial, industrial and residential customers. The company has locations in California, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado.
