WESTERN WASTE AWARDED MAJORITY OF ONE
 OF LARGEST U.S. MUNICIPAL CONTRACTS
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Waste Industries (NYSE: WW) has been awarded an $80 million, six-year contract by the City of San Jose, Calif., to provide recycling services and refuse collection to almost 60 percent of the single-family residences in the city. San Jose is one of the largest privately serviced municipalities in the United States. This agreement, which provides for up to three one-year extensions at the city's option, expands Western Waste's presence into the Northern California marketplace.
Beginning in July 1993, the company will service 105,000 of San Jose's estimated 180,000 residences. Western Waste's first-year revenues are estimated at $12 million. With this contract, the City of San Jose becomes the largest customer in Western Waste's portfolio.
In July 1990, the city began an exhaustive request for proposal process. Six firms, including national and international organizations, responded with proposals. In choosing Western Waste, San Jose officials cited the company's thorough technical proposal, excellent data monitoring and reporting and good community relations program.
"San Jose's pioneering 'Recycling Plus!' program is recognized widely as one of the most innovative and comprehensive solid waste management systems," said Mark Bozajian, executive vice president of Western Waste. "We are pleased and excited to serve the city. Its award of this contract affirms Western Waste's ability to provide superior service and integrated capabilities."
"Moving into Northern California was one of our strategic priorities, having previously established a solid base in the central and southern parts of the state," stated Kosti Shirvanian, president and chief executive officer. "This contract provides a platform for our northern expansion."
Western Waste Industries is a leading integrated solid waste management company, providing collection, recycling, composting and disposal services for commercial, industrial and residential customers. The company has locations in California, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and Colorado.
