WESTERN NEW YORK FORD CAR, TRUCK SALES JUMP

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford (NYSE: F) dealers in Western New York concluded 1992 with double-digit sales increases for cars and trucks -- paced by the hot-selling Ford Tempo and Taurus cars and the Ford Econoline and Ford Explorer trucks.
Ford dealers sold 8,871 cars and 7,006 trucks last year for increases of 34.2 percent and 17.5 percent, respectively, over 1991. Tempo led the way with a gigantic 91.5 percent increase over '91, followed by Taurus, the best-selling car in America last year, with a 78 percent hike.
Dealers sold 2,294 Taurus models in '92, recording a whopping 188.7 percent increase in December alone, as the car turned in a spectacular stretch run to achieve national sales honors with a total of 409,751 sales.
Ford Probe, Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 1993, posted a 45.8 percent sales gain in 1992 over 1991.
Econoline sales leaped 75.7 percent in '92, followed by Ford Aerostar with a 35.8 percent hike and the Ford Explorer, up 27.4 percent.
"The market's strength in recent months is encouraging, especially the return of individual consumers to the car market," said Ronald Tillier, Ford Division's Pittsburgh Region sales manager, covering Western New York. "Ford Motor Company was the only major manufacturer, domestic or foreign, to expand both car and truck market share. And our total vehicle market share rose by more than 1.5 percentage points, reaching its highest level since 1978."
