WESTERN DIGITAL ELECTS HAGGERTY CHAIRMAN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Succeeds Roger Johnson, Recently Confirmed Head
 of General Services Administration
IRVINE, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire -- Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) announced today the election of Charles A. Haggerty as chairman and chief executive officer. Haggerty, who joined the company on June 1, 1992, as president and chief operating officer, succeeds Roger W. Johnson, who was appointed by President Clinton to head the General Services Administration and has been confirmed to that post by the U.S. Senate. Johnson, 59, served as chairman and chief executive officer of Western Digital since 1984 and joined the company in 1982.
"Western Digital is fortunate to have an experienced individual like Chuck Haggerty become its leader at this challenging and exciting time in the company's history," said I.M. Booth, an outside director of Western Digital and chairman of the nominating committee. "Chuck has brought a lot of focus to the operations of the company over the last year. His extensive computer industry experience and his emphasis on quality make him an excellent new leader for Western Digital in the nineties.
"Roger Johnson's contributions to Western Digital over the last 11 years speak for themselves," said Booth. "Under his stewardship since 1982, the company has grown into a billion dollar Fortune 500 company with more than 7,500 employees worldwide. We are appreciative of Roger's entrepreneurial leadership and for his wisdom in leaving the company in such strong management hands."
Johnson joined Western Digital in 1982 from Burroughs Corp. where he served as president of the Office Systems Group. He had previously served in executive capacities at Measurex Corp., Memorex Corp., the Singer Co. and the General Electric Co.
Haggerty, 51, came to Western Digital after a 28-year career at IBM Corp. where he served in a variety of management and executive capacities. He was elected to the Western Digital board of directors in January 1993.
Before joining Western Digital last June, Haggerty was vice president of worldwide OEM storage marketing at IBM. Before that assignment, he served as vice president/general manager, low-end mass- storage products, responsible for operations in Rochester, Minn., Fujisawa, Japan and Havant, United Kingdom. Under his direction, the low-end mass-storage operation developed state-of-the-art 3.5- and 2.5-inch disk drives, arrays and optical storage devices. Haggerty's storage products team in Rochester played a key role in the overall site's capturing of the coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1990.
Earlier in his career at IBM, he served as plant manager in Boca Raton, Fla., from 1978 to 1981 as part of the storied independent business unit that launched the IBM PC from that site. He was site general manager of the Rochester facility from 1983 to 1985 and served as vice president, worldwide operations for the AS/400, the computing industry's most successful mid-range data processing system, from 1987 to 1989.
A graduate of the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., and a native of Rochester, Haggerty serves on the board of trustees of his alma mater.
