WESTERN DIGITAL ACHIEVES ISO CERTIFICATION AT SINGAPORE DISK DRIVE MANUFACTURING AND MALAYSIA IC ASSEMBLY/TEST SITES

 Sets Corporate-Wide ISO Goal for Mid-1994;
 ISO Certification Included in Company's
 Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Quality Program
 IRVINE, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) today announced that two of its manufacturing sites have achieved certification to the International Organization for Standardizations' ISO 9002 Quality Systems Model and that it plans to obtain company-wide ISO certification by mid-1994. Western Digital's Singapore and Malaysia facilities have successfully met the criteria for all 18 elements of the standard applied to processes for producing Caviar(TM) and additional disk drive products, and assembly, test, finishing and direct shipments for semiconductor operations, respectively.
 Compliance to the standards' elements was verified by a 20 man- day on-site assessment of Singapore's documented Quality System by British Standards Institute's (BSI) Quality Assurance Division, an internationally recognized third-party registrar. Malaysia certification was obtained from the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM). Western Digital's continued compliance to standards will be regularly monitored by consistent on- site assessments.
 The ISO 9002 is the quality model for production, installation, final inspection and test processes. The ISO 9000 Technical Committee was formed in 1979, and currently has active participants in 42 countries.
 ISO certification is part of Western Digital's continued commitment to quality. Western Digital's "Continuous Process Improvement" program was implemented in 1990 in order to maintain that high level of commitment. This program is emphasized in all areas and organizations of the company, and is supported by major investments in training, systems and processes.
 "ISO certification of our facilities in Singapore and Malaysia is an important ingredient of our ongoing quality and customer satisfaction efforts," said Chuck Haggerty, president and chief operating officer, Western Digital. "Due in large part to these efforts, we have been able to develop a roster of household-name OEM customers over the last year. Our goal is to have the remainder of our worldwide facilities ISO certified by June 1994 as we concentrate on making the process of quality improvement a way of life at Western Digital."
