WESTERN AUTO TO SELL MIDLAND INTERNATIONAL MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS UNIT

 KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Western Auto Supply Company today announced an agreement to sell its Midland International mobile communications unit to an affiliate of Simmonds Communications, Ltd. Western Auto is part of the automotive group of Sears Merchandise Group.
 Midland is primarily engaged in the sale of land mobile radio communications systems. It is also a major marketer of consumer CB radios. Both products are sold worldwide under the Midland brand name.
 Simmonds is a Canadian communications company listed on The Toronto Stock Exchange. It has been the distributor for Midland in Canada since 1990.
 John Leach, President of Western Auto, said the sale of Midland will allow Western Auto to further focus its resources on its core automotive aftermarket business. The transaction is subject to the normal contingencies and is expected to be completed within 30 days.
