 WESTCOAST PETROLEUM AND CHIEFTAIN INTERNATIONAL
 ANNOUNCE EXPLORATION AGREEMENTS
 EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ - Westcoast Petroleum Ltd. and Chieftain International Inc. (AMEX: CID; Toronto, Calgary: CID) announced today that each had independently signed exploration agreements with Fina Exploration Libya B.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Petrofina of Belgium.
 Westcoast Petroleum is a Calgary-based exploration and production company, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Westcoast Energy Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia. Chieftain International is an Edmonton- based exploration and production company.
 Under these exploration agreements, Westcoast Petroleum and Chieftain International will each earn a 7.5 percent participating interest in 3.9 million acres in Blocks NC 170, NC 171 and NC 172 located in the Sirte Basin of Libya.
 The work commitment includes an extensive seismic program in the area followed by a 12-well drilling program. It is anticipated that the first well will be drilled in the first half of 1993 and the remainder by 1996.
 The agreement is subject to approval by the Libyan National Oil Company and the Libyan Authorities.
