WEST ONE BANK IS STATE'S TOP SBA LENDER

BOISE, Idaho, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- West One Bank, Idaho, is the state's leading Small Business Administration (SBA) lender in dollar volume, according to data released by the Boise SBA office, the bank announced today.
West One provided loans totalling more than $13.4 million during SBA's fiscal year ending Sept. 30.
"SBA loans help many businesses get the capital they need to expand," said Bob Lane, president of West One Bank, Idaho. "In turn, the businesses keep Idaho's economy going strong by pumping money back into the communities. West One, with its 125-year history, continues to be an integral part of Idaho's growth."
SBA approved a total of 228 loans during its 1992 fiscal year, which helped create 1,041 new jobs in Idaho. The total number of SBA-approved loans in Idaho have increased by up to 22 percent each year for the past four years. Loan amounts also have steadily increased, with the 1992 fiscal year showing a 30-percent growth.
Lane attributes the increase to the state's healthy economy. "The rest of the nation may be feeling the effects of a recession, but Idaho's economy continues to grow stronger."
West One SBA loans have helped a variety of businesses, from bakeries to medical clinics to building suppliers. The money is used most often to purchase real estate, furniture and equipment; refinance debt; increase working capital; or expand inventory. The bank provides extended terms for repayment, while the SBA guarantees up to 90 percent of the loan.
Local banks can help businesses determine whether they meet the qualifications of size, need and credit eligibility for an SBA loan. The bank then works with SBA for approval. Some banks, like West One, have preferred status and are able to provide approval without going to the SBA.
"To become a preferred SBA lender, a bank must establish itself as a proven commercial lender," said Roy Barns, SBA assistant district director of finance and investment. "West One Bank has done that and done that well. In fact, I've been told that West One provided the first guaranteed SBA loan in Idaho when the program came into existence in 1953."
West One Bank, Idaho is a subsidiary of West One Bancorp (NASDAQ-NMS: WEST), a regional bank holding company with headquarters in Boise. It currently has assets of $6.6 billion and operates more than 200 offices with 4,400 employees in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Utah.
