WEST COMPANY ANNOUNCES DIRECTOR JAMES A. WEST DECEASED

 LIONVILLE, Pa., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Directors and Officers of The West Company, Incorporated (NYSE: WST) regret to announce that James A. West passed away suddenly on Oct. 20, 1993, at the age of 62. Mr. West was the son of company founder Herman O. West and brother of Chairman William S. West and retired Director Franklin H. West. James West had held various management positions in the company and was a member of the Board of Directors at the time of his death.
 After receiving A.B. and M.B.A. degrees from Dartmouth College, Mr. West joined The West Company in September 1956 as a Sales Engineer. In 1960, he was appointed General Manager of the Plastics Division. He was transferred to Montgomery, Pa., in 1962 when Plasti-Vac Corporation was purchased by The West Company. Mr. West returned to the company's Phoenixville, Pa., headquarters in 1965 to found the International Division. He served as Vice President for International Operations until 1979 when he retired from the company. Since his retirement, Mr. West has operated his own consulting company, West Associates.
 James A. West served for 31 years as a Director of The West Company. He was also a trustee of the Herman O. West Foundation which administers the Company's donations to charity.
 Mr. West is survived by his wife La Verne Sanderson West and his four daughters, Gay, Julia, Amy and Karen.
