WERTHEIM SCHRODER RELEASES GROUND-BREAKING NEW RESEARCH REPORT ON U.S. SURGICAL'S PROSPECTS IN BURGEONING LESS-INVASIVE SURGERY MARKET

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- Lorraine Schwarz, Wertheim Schroder's medical technology~hospital supplies analyst, released a ground-breaking research report last week on U.S. Surgical. The company's stock, which has been on a "breathtaking roller coaster ride" over the past two years, has been rated a "table-pounding buy," says Ms. Schwarz.
One of the most exciting developments in medicine in the last couple of years is laparoscopic, or less-invasive, surgery. U.S. Surgical pioneered and continues to dominate this burgeoning new market, which will reach $740 million in sales this year. The report looks at the market in-depth, to understand its dynamics and to forecast its progress over the next five years.
Ms. Schwarz's research suggests that the laparoscopic market will be a $3.1 billion market by 1996, and that U.S. Surgical (which now has over 75 percent of the market) should have about 60 percent of the market by 1996. The continued explosive growth of this market will drive earnings growth for U.S. Surgical of 46 percent this year, 32 percent in 1993, 34 percent in 1994 and 31 percent in each of the following two years.
"Success attracts controversy" says Ms. Schwarz. "This stock had an amazing run-up prior to the start of this year. This year the stock has experienced a sharp correction because health care stocks fell out of favor and because expectations for U.S. Surgical did get carried away. However, if you believe, as we do, in the enormous growth potential of laparoscopic market, there is an outstanding opportunity here for investors who missed the stock the first time around."
