WERE THEY VICTIMS OF THE BEAST? Bid to solve 11-year mystery.

Byline: JUSTIN PENROSE

TWO women who vanished on the same stretch of road 11 years ago could have been killed by one of Britain's worst serial rapists.

Lola Shenkoya and Elizabeth Chau were snatched in Ealing, West London, within nine months of each other, but their bodies have never been found.

Serial rapist Andrezej Kunowski, jailed for murdering 12-year-old Katerina Koneva and known as "The Beast", was the prime suspect but died in jail 15 months ago.

Detectives are now trying to find the vital pieces of evidence that will close the case and end two of the longest unsolved missing persons inquiries.

Police will be handing out leaflets in the area this week on the 11th anniversary of Lola's disappearance while a pounds 15,000 reward is also being offered for information. Detective Inspector Andy Manning, who is leading the inquiry, said: "Elizabeth and Lola had everything to live for when they vanished. We need to solve this mystery."

Kunowski, 52, an illegal immigrant, came to Britain in 1996 after absconding from jail in Poland where he had been convicted of 17 rapes and faced a total of 70 charges.

The next year he began stalking schoolgirls in London and on May 22, 1997, he followed Katerina to her home in Hammersmith and strangled her with a cord.

He was described by police as "probably the most dangerous" of all sex offenders when he was jailed for life in March 2004.

Elizabeth Chau, a 19-year-old law and business student at Thames Valley University, disappeared on April 16, 1999, as she walked to her family home in Ealing.

Nine months later, Lola Shenkoya, 27, a US citizen of Nigerian origin who had just completed a computer technology degree, vanished after taking a bus to Ealing Broadway on January 3, 2000.
