WELCOME TO.. Hellamory; Hollywood's new satanic superhero was born on Mull.

HE looks like he came from the pits of hell but, we can reveal, Hollywood's satanic superhero Hellboy was spawned... in Balamory.

America's summer blockbuster reveals how Hellboy arrives on Earth after a black magic ceremony on the island of Mull - the home of the BBC's hit kids' show.

Young fans flock to Tobermory to see the painted homes of characters Edie McCredie, Archie the inventor, PC Plum and Miss Hoolie.

Now they could be joined by fans of the comic book hero, now the star of a major movie.

In the film, starring Ron Perlman, Hellboy first appears on an unnamed Scottish island during World War II.

But draft scripts on the internet reveal Mull as the location where he is raised from the bowels of Hell by Russian monk Rasputin and Nazis desperate to turn the tide of war.

Allied troops ambush the bad guys and adopt Hellboy as a force for good.

The Scottish ceremony provides the thrilling opening scenes to the pounds 33million Hollywood movie.

And US fans are planning pilgrimages to west coast of Scotland to see where Hellboy was conceived.

Director Guilermo del Toro said: 'He is a character that struggles with a dark side of himself, while trying to remain a good man' On a fan website hordes of Hellboy enthusiasts have announced their plans to attend a screening of the film at the World Science Fiction Convention, to be held in Glasgow on August 2005.

They even hope their favourite freak superhero will be nominated for an award.

One American fan said: 'Ah, Glasgow, a European City of Culture, home to Celtic Football Club (and Rangers, of course, depending on your religious inclinations) and the inestimable Burrell Collection.

'Fun place, and the fish and chips aren't bad either. We want a Hellboy special screening and a questions and answer about Hellboy 2.'

The film hit number one at the American box office during its first week and grossed pounds 59million.

Hellboy actor Ron Perlman, also starred as vampire Reinhardt in Blade 2 but is best known as the monster in the 1980s TV series Beauty and the Beast. Last night, a Western Isles tourist board spokeswoman said: 'The Island of Mull certainly seems to be attracting a lot of attention from Hollywood recently.

'It's probably because of all the beautiful rugged scenery.

'We already get booked out during the summer holidays because of Balamory fans. So fans of Hellboy better get in quick.'
