OPENING OF SILICON VALLEY, CALIF. OFFICE
NEW YORK, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Weil, Gotshal & Manges today became the first major New York-based law firm to open a Silicon Valley, Calif. office focusing on technology and intellectual property.
Weil, Gotshal & Manges is a commercial law firm of more than 600 lawyers based in New York, with U.S. offices in Washington, Dallas, Houston and Miami and international offices in London, Budapest and Warsaw.
The firm's new office will be located in Menlo Park adjacent to Stanford University and will be headed by Miles R. Gilburne, Ronald S. Laurie, and Daniel R. Siegel, all of whom have strong connections with Silicon Valley.
Commenting on the Silicon Valley office, Michael A. Epstein and Salem M. Katsh, co-chairman of the firm's Technology and Proprietary Rights Group which consists of 40 lawyers firm-wide, said: "This office is an important addition to our U.S. and international capabilities in technology and intellectual property. Miles Gilburne has, since 1986, been focusing on information technology as founding partner of The Cole Gilburne Fund, an early stage venture known for its activities in communications and media technology. Prior to 1986, Gilburne was a founding partner of Blanc Gilburne Williams and Johnston, a Los Angeles based firm with a national reputation in computer law, where he was in charge of a full range of technology related transactions including license agreements, strategic partnerships and intellectual property matters.
Gilburne is founder and an editor-in-chief of "The Computer Lawyer," a monthly publications providing in-depth coverage of legal issues in the computer industry. He is a frequent speaker and has written numerous articles on a variety of topics related to the financing, protection and exploitation of intellectual property in technology based businesses. He holds an A.B. degree, summa cum laude, from Princeton and a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
Ronald S. Laurie was formerly head of the computer law group in the Northern California office of Irell and Manella. He has worked in Silicon Valley for over three decades, first as a systems engineer (at Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. in Sunnyvale) and later as a lawyer specializing in technology issues. He has over twenty years of legal experience in the area of proprietary rights disputes involving computer technology, including hardware, software, semiconductors and telecommunications, with particular emphasis on compatibility and reverse engineering issues. He has represented a number of major software publishers in copyright infringement suits against software pirates. He is a registered patent attorney and an important part of his practice involves the prosecution, commercial exploitation and litigation of patents on software-based inventions.
Laurie has been an advisor to the U.S. Copyright Office, the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, a U.N. agency based in Geneva. He has lectured on leading edge computer law issues throughout the U.S. and internationally. He holds a degree in industrial engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco.
Daniel R. Siegel, formerly with Irell and Manella, is an expert in computer and intellectual property law. Siegel regularly advises national and international clients in the computer industry on leading edge patent and copyright issues such as those stemming from the development of functionally compatible hardware and software products. He is a prolific author and represents a number of domestic and international hi tech companies. Siegel holds a Sc.B. degree in computer science from Brown University and a J.D. from Columbia University.
