WEIGHT WATCHERS INTERNATIONAL RESPONDS TO FTC WEIGHT LOSS INDUSTRY ADVERTISING INVESTIGATION

JERICHO, N.Y., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Weight Watchers International today issued the following:
Weight Watchers International confirms that it has been voluntarily participating in the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) investigation of advertising in the weight loss industry. This investigation began three years ago as a result of Congressman Wyden's congressional hearings on the entire weight loss industry advertising practices.
Weight Watchers International has been discussing the substantiation of a few of its ads which appeared between 1988 and 1990. Weight Watchers is confident that its advertising has been fully substantiated. The FTC investigation does not involve the health and safety of the Weight Watchers program.
Separately, in August 1992, Weight Watchers filed a joint petition with four other commercial weight loss companies for industry-wide Trade Regulation Rule. The company took this action because the current FTC strategy to establish individualized rulings with separate companies would ultimately create inconsistencies and inequities in the regulation of advertising causing consume confusion.
Weight Watchers believes that industry-wide "truth in advertising" requires standardization regulations to insure that consumer interest are protected by a consistent code of conduct and practices. The company officially adopted and promotes nationally a Weight Loss Consumer Bill of Rights which outlines what consumers should know before starting any weight loss program. The need for a Trade Regulation Rule is underscored by continued advertising by unscrupulous weight loss companies and products, which would still go unscrutinized by the government.
