WEGENER CORPORATION ANNOUNCES SECOND QUARTER RESULTS

DULUTH, Ga., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Wegener Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: WGNR) today announced that the operating results from continuing operations for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 26, 1993 were a loss of $(93,000) or $(0.01) per share and $(169,000) or $(0.02) per share compared to a loss of $(164,000) or $(0.02) per share and $(260,000) or $(0.04) per share for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 28, 1992.
The company has two wholly owned subsidiaries, Wegener Communications, Inc. (WCI) and Telecrafter Services Corporation (TSC). Effective Feb. 1, 1993, the company sold certain operating assets of TSC. The operating results of TSC are shown separately in the summarized operations data as discontinued operations.
Revenues for the three months ended Feb. 26, 1993, were $3,368,000, down 13.4 percent from revenues of $3,889,000 for the three months ended Feb. 28, 1992. Revenues were $7,135,000 for the six months ended Feb. 26, 1993, down 9.7 percent from revenues of $7,904,000 for the six months ended Feb. 28, 1992.
Decreases in the second quarter and first six months of fiscal 1993 reflect a 23.4 percent and 27.8 percent decrease in the Telecom and Custom Products Group revenues compared to fiscal 1992, primarily due to reduced shipments to the cable television and radio network industries. Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) revenues decreased 5.3 percent in the second quarter and increased 4.4 percent for the first six months of fiscal 1993 compared to fiscal 1992.
The company's gross profit margins were 38.4 percent and 34.9 percent for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 26, 1993, compared to 31.9 percent and 33.4 percent for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 28, 1992. The increase in the second quarter is due primarily to product mix within the Telecom and DBS product lines.
Loss from discontinued operations for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 26, 1993 was $(197,000) or $(0.03) per share and $(120,000) or $(0.02) per share compared to $(138,000) or $(0.02) per share and $(34,000) or $(0.00) per share for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 28, 1992. Net revenues of TSC were $331,000 and $1,618,000 for the three and six month periods ended Feb. 26, 1993, compared to $752,000 and $2,547,000 for the same periods ended Feb. 28, 1992. The second quarter of fiscal 1993 includes revenue generated through Feb. 1, 1993.
WCI's new digital audio products are gaining momentum in the marketplace and the backlog is currently at its highest level in three years. The second quarter of fiscal 1993 featured orders from Fox Broadcasting for addressable satellite video receivers, Jones Satellite Audio Network for WCI's digital audio radio network products, and Satellite Music Network for the ongoing expansi networks. Deliveries of these orders began in March 1993.
Business music customers, Muzak and 3M, continued to expand their business music networks with WCI's new digital audio and analog audio products.
Cable television pay-per-view programer, TheatreVision, and regional sports programer, SportsChannel Pacific, both placed orders for WCI's addressable multi-feed satellite video receivers. X-Press Information Service placed orders for data products to support their growing data delivery service to cable subscribers. MHz Sales, national equipment distributor, placed an order for cable television equipment with deliveries scheduled throughout the year. Subsequent to the end of the second quarter, The Weather Channel signed a contract with WCI for development and production of a new generation of local forecast display units.
Internationally, ASTRA, the European DBS (Direct Satellite Broadcast) network, ordered transmission equipment to support the commissioning of their newest satellite. ASTRA previously adopted WCI's proprietary PANDA audio processing technology as the standard for millions of home viewers throughout Europe. WCI also shipped digital audio satellite receivers to Telespazio, for Italy's first digital audio network, and to Virgin Radio, Britain's first independent national radio network.
Wegener Corporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary, designs and manufactures equipment for the business broadcast, cable television, data communications, and broadcast radio and television industries.
