WEEKS NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF NEW YORK TIMES REGIONAL
 NEWSPAPER GROUP
NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- James C. Weeks today was named executive vice president and chief operating officer of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. The announcement was made by John R. Harrison, president of the group.
Weeks, 50, was named senior vice president of the group in 1987 after having served as publisher of the Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, California, since 1985. He joined the Times Company in 1971 and was named director of advertising of the three dailies which made up the company's regional newspaper group in 1972. He became director of newspaper acquisitions for the company in 1973 and in 1978 he became general manager of the Wilmington (N.C.) Star-News. He was named publisher of that newspaper in 1983.
Reginald Davenport, 44, a group senior vice president responsible for several of the smaller regional newspapers, will now report to Weeks. In addition, the group staff will begin reporting to Weeks and the publishers of the larger regional newspapers will continue to do so.
Harrison, 59, who has been president of the group since 1971 when the New York Times Company acquired several newspapers from Cowles Communications, announced earlier his plan to retire in June 1993. Under his leadership the group has grown from the original three newspapers, all located in Florida, to the present 32 newspapers in 11 states.
As publisher of the Gainesville Sun in Florida, Harrison won the 1965 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing as well as several other journalism awards. Upon his retirement he plans to write a syndicated column called "Hey, Jack!" That column will debut in the Wilmington Star-News.
