Public hearings

Hearing of Commissioner-designate Catherine Ashton

On Monday 20 October 2008, the European Parliament will hold hearings with the British Commissioner designate, Catherine Ashton - Baroness Ashton of Upholland. Over three hours, she will answer questions from MEPs about her political career, her views on the EU and her plans for the trade portfolio.

The hearing follows the resignation from the Commission of Peter Mandelson, who has been appointed to the British government. Baroness Ashton is proposed to take up the trade portfolio previously held by Mr Mandelson.

She will therefore take part in a hearing before the International Trade Committee, with participation from the Foreign Affairs and Development Committees.

The committee will adopt its evaluations in the form of a letter. These will be made public once they have been considered on Tuesday by the Conference of Presidents. The full Parliament is scheduled to vote on the appointment of Baroness Ashton to the Commission on Wednesday at 11.30.

LUX prize to be awarded in the presence of directors and actors

The European Parliament will host the second award ceremony of the LUX Prize. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, directors of 'Le silence de Lorna', Kornel Mundruczo, director of 'Delta', and actress Orsi Toth as well as Miroslav Janek, director of 'Obcan Havel', will be present for the award ceremony in the Hemicycle. EP President Hans-Gert Pottering will hand over the trophee to the winner.

The ceremony will be broadcasted live on Europe by Satellite, from 11.15 to 11.30.

A press conference chaired by EP Vice-President Gerard Onesta and with participation of directors and actors from the three finalist films will be held the same day at 14.30 in the European Parliament press room. Directors and actors will be available for interviews after the ceremony from 12.00 to 13.00.

A prize to promote European cinema

The purpose of the LUX Prize is to break down the languages barriers that often prevent European films from being distributed widely and to facilitate the circulation of European films and give a boost to cinematic work within the European Union. The winning film will be sub-titled in the 23 official languages of the European Union. The value of the LUX Prize is estimated at 87,000.

The three finalists films are: 'Delta' by Kornel Mundruczo (Hungary, Germany), 'Le silence de Lorna' by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Belgium, UK, France, Italy), and 'Obcan Havel' by Miroslav Janek and Pavel Koutecky (Czech Republic).

A delegation of MEPs will travel to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti from 25 October to 2 November 2008. MEPs will focus on food security following the global food crisis caused by soaring prices and peaceful solutions to border conflicts. Good governance in the region will also be examined.

The delegation will have an exchange of views about the "EU regional political partnership for peace, security and development in the Horn of Africa", an initiative on which the Development Committee adopted a report in April 2007.

MEPs will also discuss the implementation of the Algiers peace agreement that ended the border war (1998 - 2000) between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The Security Council decided not to renew the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)'s mandate beyond 31 July 2008.

MEPs will meet among others representatives of Governments, of international organisations and of civil society and non-governmental organisations.

14th Conference of Presidents of the Outermost Regions (ORs) of the European Union

This conference brings together the seven presidents of the outermost European regions - Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands - representatives of the European Commission and the three Member States concerned, i.e. France, Spain and Portugal.
