Marking the Farewell of Actress Bea Arthur
BURBANK, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- After seven seasons as Dorothy Zbornak, the domineering but soft hearted grande dame of "The Golden Girls," Emmy Award-winning actress Beatrice Arthur bids farewell to the series in a special one-hour episode that will see her marrying and leaving to start a new life, Saturday, May 9 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on NBC.
"The Golden Girls" is a production of Witt-Thomas-Harris Productions in association with Touchstone Television.
In the hour-long episode, Blanche (Rue McClanahan) convinces Dorothy (Arthur) to go out with her Uncle Lucas (Leslie Nielsen). To their surprise, they fall in love and plan to get married. While "golden girls" Rose (Betty White) and Blanche try to keep the foursome from breaking up, Sophia (Estelle Getty) must decide whether to go with her daughter or stay with her loyal friends and roommates.
Guest-starring in the s?ode as Dorothy's future husband is Nielsen, a veteran with more than 60 motion pictures to his credit and more than 1,000 television appearances. Best known for his role as the literal-minded doctor in the 1980 hit film, "Airplane!," he has also recently starred in "The Naked Gun" and "Naked Gun 2 1/2."
The season finale, "One Flew Out of the Cuckoo's Nest," marks the end of "The Golden Girls" reign on NBC as one of the most successful comedies in television history. The recipient of two Emmy Awards for Best Comedy Series, the show has also seen each of its four stars honored with Emmys as Best Actress in a Comedy, a first and enduring record for a comedy series.
"The Golden Girls" is also credited with delivering unbeatable ratings for NBC on Saturday nights and pushed NBC into first place during the 1985-86 season. The show has since become the network's unchallenged anchor for the Saturday night lineup.
A newly developed version of the series, "The Golden Palace," will debut this fall on CBS, starring "The Golden Girls" stars White, McClanahan and Getty.
"The Golden Girls" is executive produced by Paul Junger Witt, Tony Thomas and Susan Harris. Touchstone Television is a production banner for The Walt Disney Studios, which is a business segment of The Walt Disney Co.
