DEPUTY PM Nick Clegg and Business Secretary Vince Cable swept through town yesterday and declared: Huddersfield manufacturing can lead the fight against recession.

The pair were here to award a pounds 2 million grant to David Brown Gear Systems which will help create around 80 jobs.

Earlier they had seen Huddersfield University's new pounds 8 million Centre of Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.

Afterwards, Mr Cable said: "Huddersfield and towns like it could be at the cutting edge of the British recovery if we can really get behind these manufacturing industries.

"We want to promote manufacturers in these very technologically advanced companies like David Brown.

"Huddersfield University is really getting behind and supporting British firms. It is a very, very good collaboration of the kind we need to have across the country."
